Tesla's 4680 battery production breaks the million mark

2022-02-25
Tesla has announced that it has produced 1 million 4680 batteries at a pilot plant in California, the United States, and the company is expected to start delivering its new Model Y equipped with 4680 batteries and structural battery packs, foreign media reported.

In 2020, Tesla introduced its new 4680 battery, which is a cylindrical battery with a larger size.  Tesla claims that the 4680 battery delivers a six-fold increase in power and a five-fold increase in energy density, while significantly reducing costs.
Tesla has been producing the 4680 battery at a "pilot plant" in Fremont, California, since it was announced, and deploying mass production at plants such as Texas and Berlin.

In January, Drew Baglino, Tesla's senior vice president of engineering, said Tesla had made "significant progress" in ramping up battery production at its pilot plant in California, but was still unable to determine the plant's capacity.  But Tesla announced that in January it had produced its millionth 4680 battery at its California plant, meaning it had produced 1 million 4680 batteries as of January.

At the standard of about 1,000 batteries per car, 1 million would be enough to produce about 1,000 Model Ys at the Texas plant.  That's not enough to keep up with Tesla's demand, but with production of 4680 cells at the Texas plant increasing in line with Model Y production, if Tesla can produce 100,000pcs 4680 cells per week, that would be a good start for the company to produce 100 Model Y units per week.

Baglino also said Tesla does not expect the 4680 battery to be a bottleneck to Model Y production at the Texas plant, and he said the company is also making progress in deploying larger 4680 production at the plant.  (Source: Tan Xuan, Galaxy Motors)
